Learning about Machine Learning: 5 lessons for Product Managers

Machine Learning can become either a super power of your product or its biggest user confusion, and PMs can play a very important role in whether it will be the former or the latter case. We'll take a close look at what it means to be a PM for ML products and what they should keep in mind in order to be successful.

Scott Eblen, Twitter

Scaling your Product Skills. What PM skills do you need as you grow from an individual contributor to leading product development at a company? People often assume senior product managers simply do the same work plus people management or do the same tasks with more strategic perspective. In this talk I’ll dig into some common misconceptions and look at how to evolve skills to be more impactful as you grow.

11:30 AM
Kaarel Kuddu, Transferwise

At some point in your product journey you will need to take your product out from your home market and into new ones across the globe. Kaarel will share some of TranferWise-s stories about how they went from UK focused company to a global market leader in international money sending.

1:30 PM
Etienne Martin, Lyst

Innovating from first principles. E-commerce is evolving, fast. At Lyst we are reimagining the future of how you’ll shop online, applying first principles thinking to build new products. I will talk you through our journey from understanding what customers want to how they behave, and how we translate that into product. I’ll explore the challenges of thinking outside of industry standards, and discuss the value of going beyond the accepted conventions of your vertical. Making incremental changes to existing solutions is comfortable, but to change behaviour and deliver new value to customers, we need to explore new paths .

2:00 PM
Denise Law, Economist

Teaching a 175-year-old publication how to do product. Denise Law, head of product at The Economist, documents the highs and lows of trying to bring product thinking into a legacy media organisation. She will share both success and war stories, including insights into what makes an effective product strategy and how to deal with challenges along the way.

3:00 PM
Tom Ralston, Songkick

Practicalities of using data as a product manager, and how the "qualitative vs quantitative" framing that's so often talked about doesn't provide a useful way to think about what you need as a PM. The idea is that teams should be using data to really help them try to work out two types of problems: a) what problems are meaningful to solve for users, and b) how best to solve those problems, and there are many pitfalls to navigate when you're doing each of those things. With the framing that we've grown our audience at Songkick 5x over the past 3 years, I think I have some good learnings to share of stuff I've seen first hand, and helped product teams through, which can wrap up into a bit of a framework to help PMs and teams ask the right questions as they're using data.

3:30 PM
Satya Singh, Hotels.com

Product managers are builders. However to build stuff (which we call products) we need buy-in; we also need to develop products which end users love. How do we make sure that we explain the 'Why' behind every product? How do we make sure we establish an emotional connection with our internal and external stakeholders?

This is an attention economy which lacks empathy. As product managers, we need to ensure we build products by telling great stories which empathise with internal & external stakeholders.

Attention + Empathy = Emotional Connection

I will give you some examples of how to seek attention and empathy by telling great stories. As I firmly believe, product managers are storytellers.
